From November 14 to 16, 2024, the nuLab: STEM in Motion Campaign brought a revolutionary mobile learning experience to students across Surigao del Norte. In partnership with DOST-SEI, DOST-Caraga, the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte, and JCI Surigao North, the nuLab bus engaged over 190 senior high school students from various municipalities including San Francisco, Placer, Toledo, Taganaan, Tubod, Malimono, and Surigao City. With modules on Climate Science, Internet of Things (IoT), Environmental Science, Geology, Data Science, and Weather Science, the 3-day campaign inspired youth to see STEM as an exciting, achievable path to future success.
The Challenge
In many municipalities across Surigao del Norte, students have limited access to updated scientific tools, facilities, and real-world STEM applications. While schools are eager to promote STEM learning, the gap between theoretical classroom instruction and practical, technology-driven exploration remains a major hurdle. This disconnect can hinder students’ curiosity, creativity, and confidence in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The Solution
To bridge this gap, nuLab, a mobile science learning facility developed by DOST-SEI, was deployed to Surigao del Norte. Over three consecutive days, nuLab welcomed students from nine national high schools, offering hands-on, interactive sessions in specialized STEM fields. The bus was equipped with high-tech tools and facilitated by expert mentors who brought complex scientific concepts to life. With modules tailored to real-world problems and emerging technologies, students explored pressing issues like climate change and technological innovation while using digital platforms such as data simulators and IoT systems. Each session was designed to be immersive and engaging, creating an inclusive environment where young minds could see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators.
The Result
The campaign successfully empowered nearly 200 senior high school students, expanding their understanding of STEM and instilling a sense of excitement about the future of science. Teachers reported a noticeable boost in students’ enthusiasm and participation, while many students expressed interest in pursuing STEM-related college programs. The initiative also strengthened local partnerships among educational institutions, government agencies, and civic organizations like JCI Surigao North, reaffirming a shared commitment to expanding science education and innovation in the region. As the campaign concluded, the nuLab bus left not just knowledge, but lasting inspiration—proving that science can be mobile, inclusive, and transformative
