JCI Surigao North, in collaboration with JCI Surigao Nickel, JCI Surigao Wensie, and other local partners, proudly participated in Project H.I.N.A.W. (Hygiene Initiatives for Nurturing Access to Water)—a meaningful effort to improve sanitation facilities at Mat-i Elementary School. Aligned with the JCI Philippines National Program on Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 6, this project installed handwashing stations to promote better hygiene and health among students.
The Challenge
Many public elementary schools in Surigao City, including Mat-i Elementary School, face challenges in maintaining adequate hygiene infrastructure. Limited access to clean water and handwashing facilities poses a health risk to young learners, affecting their attendance, concentration, and overall academic performance.
The Solution
Through Project H.I.N.A.W., JCI Surigao North joined forces with JCI Surigao Nickel, JCI Surigao Wensie, PICE Surigao del Norte Chapter, and Primewater Surigao Metropolitan to deliver sustainable hygiene solutions. The project focused on installing handwashing stations, promoting hand hygiene practices, and raising awareness on the importance of water access and sanitation. These improvements ensure that students have safe, consistent access to clean water—an essential part of a healthy learning environment.
The Result
With the successful installation of new handwashing stations, over 200 pupils at Mat-i Elementary School now benefit from better hygiene facilities. The initiative has strengthened the school’s capacity to safeguard student health, reduce absenteeism due to hygiene-related illnesses, and foster a culture of cleanliness. More than just infrastructure, the project instilled valuable habits that support the long-term well-being of the school community.
