On April 10, 2025, in celebration of JCI Week, JCI Surigao North, in partnership with DOST Surigao del Norte and the LGU of Tubod, held “MSME Forward: Bridging Businesses to Innovation” at the Tubod Municipal Hall. The event aimed to empower local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by connecting them with technological tools, expert support, and government programs designed to help them scale and thrive in today’s competitive market.

The Challenge

MSMEs in Surigao del Norte often face critical barriers to growth—outdated production practices, limited access to innovation, and low awareness of available government support. Many businesses struggle to meet industry standards or expand due to a lack of resources, technical knowledge, or connections to programs that could enhance their operations.

The Solution

To address these gaps, the event introduced participants to DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) and a wide range of services such as packaging and labeling assistance, nutritional testing, shelf-life analysis, and technical consultancy. The program emphasized the value of embracing science and innovation to enhance productivity and product quality. Participants also engaged in personalized pre-technology needs assessments, allowing DOST experts to recommend tailored interventions for each business. A food safety and cGMP crash course was conducted by the Caraga Food Safety Team, ensuring entrepreneurs are informed and equipped to meet regulatory and consumer standards. Overall, the initiative helped bridge the divide between innovation and local enterprise.

The Result

The event successfully provided MSMEs with actionable insights, access to relevant technologies, and direct support channels. Many participants left with renewed confidence, a clearer growth direction, and stronger links to institutional partners. MSME Forward not only empowered local entrepreneurs but also strengthened the ecosystem for innovation-driven enterprise development in the province.
